British Values

Preparing Children for Life in Modern Britain

The Department for Education introduced a statutory duty for schools to promote British Values from September 2014.

At St John Fisher we are proud that, as a Catholic school, we promote values that are both Catholic and British including: democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. As a Catholic, Rights Respecting School, these values permeate all that that we do.

The statements below are an indication some of the many ways in which these values are embedded in our school.

Democracy

Children learn about how they can influence decision making within school and how British citizens can do so at a local and national level through the democratic process.

A School Council is elected each year and meets regularly. Visits are made to the Local Mayor and Council Chambers.

Pupils are taught through Article 12 of the UN CRC that their views will be taken into account when decisions are made which affect them.

School wide activities during Democracy Week explicitly taught children how local and national democracy work.

Where appropriate links within history teaching are made eg. Ancient Greeks,

Children feel empowered to take an interest in and express their views about all aspects of school life.

Children have an age appropriate understanding about how democracy developed and works in Britain.

Rule of Law

Children are taught about how abiding by class and school rules is essential for everyone’s wellbeing and safety. They learn about the Rules of the Church and God and how these enable us to live out the values of Christ.Children also learn how British citizens are required to obey the Law.

There is a clear behaviour policy which is regularly discussed and explained to all in classes and assemblies.

Classes create their own rules and charters

The rules of the Church and of God are highlighted in RE lessons, assemblies and masses; children’s understanding of these is shown through the work in their books.

Older children attend a Junior Citizens event at which a variety of public services (police, fire, ambulance, transport police etc.) give practical examples of how laws exist to keep them safe and well.

Children are able to talk about why we need to behave in school and they show that they understand and abide by class and school rules.

Children are able to talk about how following the rules of the Church affects the way we live our lives.

Children understand how laws are in place for our wellbeing and safety

 

Individual Liberty

Children are taught that they have free will to make choices and that these choices have outcomes and consequences. Children are shown how to become increasingly independent in their learning.

RE planning, behaviour policies, work around being a Rights Respecting school all promote the concept of children having individual rights which come with associated responsibilities. Children are taught how to exercise their rights safely and with due consideration for the rights of others.

Children are able to discuss their work and identify what they as an individual need to in order to improve.

Children understand the importance of accepting responsibility and of their right to be heard in school. Through being consulted on a variety of aspects of school life they develop independence of thought and action

Mutual Respect and Tolerance of those with Different Faiths and Beliefs

The ethos of our Catholic school is to create a loving and caring environment in which every individual is valued and encouraged to be the best that they can be at all times. Respect for all starts with self-respect and is broadened to include: family, friends, school and parish; the world and its people; and the environment.

Our mission statement is inclusive and conveyed to children in accessible language. Respect for all is continually promoted as good manners. We are currently working towards becoming a Level 2 Rights Respecting School. Our anti-bullying policy is regularly reviewed, we have an anti-bullying week which reflects and focuses our on-going commitment to everyone within school is respected and valued.

RE planning incorporates respectful learning about other faiths and belief systems.

 

 

Children can articulate why it is important to show respect for others and how this enables everyone to access their rights.

Children are able to talk about the different faiths they have studied and demonstrate a respectful attitude towards the beliefs of others.
