MATHS

At St John Fisher we want every child to succeed in Maths, so we aim to break each area into small, manageable steps to help children to fully understand the concepts. We are using the Merton Guidance alongside The White Rose Maths scheme and the NCETM materials, which focus on the following three approaches: Concrete – children should have the opportunity to use concrete objects and manipulatives to help them understand what they are doing. Pictorial – alongside this, children should use pictorial representations. These representations can then be used to help reason and solve problems. Abstract – both concrete and pictorial representations should support children’s understanding of abstract methods. The children are taught three main strands in each area; Fluency, Reasoning and Problem Solving.
