Well-being For All

At St John Fisher, we are committed to supporting the health and well-being of all of our pupils and staff, to ensure that the school is a community where everyone feels able to thrive. We understand that positive mental well-being is essential if children and young people are to flourish and be the best they can be.

Throughout life, everyone experiences challenges that can make us vulnerable. Positive mental health is everybody’s business and we all have a role to play in supporting those in times of need.

Two key elements to support good mental health are:

Feeling Good – experiencing positive emotions like happiness, contentment and enjoyment. Including feelings like curiosity, engagement and safety.
Functioning Well – how a person is able to function in the world, this includes positive relationships and social connections, as well as feeling in control of your life and having a sense of purpose.
Our role in school is to ensure that children feel good and function well so that they are able to manage during times of change and stress. All children should feel that they are supported to reach their potential and are able to access help when they need it

Levels of Support at St John Fisher

Universal Support 

Our universal support offer is designed to meet the needs of all of our pupils through our overall ethos, school values and our wider curriculum. This includes our learning in assemblies and masses, working alongside our school nurse, our whole school approach using the Zones of Regulation and Network Hands, PSHE lessons delivered through the Jigsaw PSHE Scheme, Mental Health Week, First Aid Week, our Well-being Fortnight, TFL Citizenship sessions and the Worry Ninja workshops for the Year 6-7 transition.

Targeted support

This level of support is designed for those pupils who require differentiated support and resources or specific targeted interventions. This includes sessions with our ELSA team, daily emotional check-ins, access to the lunchtime Nurture Club, access to the sensory room, Moving On Up Y6-7 transition workshops, referrals to our Educational Well-being Practitioners (EWP’s) and referrals to other external agencies such as Jigsaw4U.

Crisis support

Crisis support is designed to support children with short term well-being needs and those who may have been made vulnerable by life experiences such as separation or bereavement. This may include sessions with our ELSA team, access to the sensory room, lunchtime support and referrals to relevant external services providers.

Parental Access To Support

Our Education Well-being Practitioners are a fantastic team of clinical psychologists who deliver individual programmes to support parents of children who are:

  • showing signs of anxiety or worry (separation, fears, Covid, returning to school etc.)
  • showing behavioural difficulties (bedtime routines, following instructions, struggling to regulate reactions etc.)

Our EWPs work directly with parents and carers. The program consists of up to 8 sessions with the parent/carer, providing strategies and tools to help support their child, and to feel more confident in responding to their child’s behaviour.
